Our Science

10 Years of Research.
One Advanced Skin Recovery Complex.

Evolutionary intelligence, decoded for skin recovery.

For millions of years, marine organisms have been remarkably resilient against relentless UV, salt erosion, and extreme environmental conditions that would break down most living things on earth.

Seaweeds generate their own molecular sun protection. Sponges produce compounds that defend against microbial threats. Corals maintain complex chemical communication networks we're only beginning to understand.

The blueprints behind these advanced survival methods hold some of the most promising potential for human health ever discovered. We spent a decade figuring out how they protect and recover, and built that intelligence into our skin recovery formulas.

Ocean discovery to science innovation.

Using advanced computational metabolomics, we've mapped the chemistry of marine organisms to human biology, building what is likely the largest collection of marine science data ever mapped to human health. It lets us identify not just what a marine extract does, but pinpoints which molecules are doing the work, and how they can be optimized for long-term skin health with unparalleled precision.

Nature's Most Advanced Skin Recovery System

Nature's Most Advanced Skin Recovery System

After analyzing hundreds of marine extracts and thousands of associated molecules, we developed The Sirenas Complex. Our proprietary blend of concentrated marine bioactives designed to work at the cellular level to restore UV damage, stop the cycle of inflammaging, and strengthen skin's natural defenses.

Powered by Sirenas Complex®

Sirenas Complex AQ

Our water-soluble active complex, used in EVERYDAY daily moisturizer and MAYDAY after-sun gel cream. Designed to stop the cycle of inflammaging, restoring UV damage, and strengthening your skin's natural barrier defense.

Sirenas Complex OS

Our oil-soluble active complex, used in EVERYDAY lip balm. The skin on our lips has no oil glands or natural defense of its own. This oil-rich matrix delivers marine bioactive intelligence in a form that deeply moisturizes and restores the sensitive lip barrier.

  • Stops the cycle of Inflammaging

Neutralizes free radicals and chronic low-level inflammation triggered by daily UV and environmental exposure.

  • Restores UV damage at the cellular level

Supports DNA repair, promotes healthy cell renewal, and rebuilds collagen and skin texture that sustained outdoor exposure breaks down.

  • Strengthens your natural skin barrier

Fortifies your skin's natural defense system, preventing the accumulation of damage and promoting optimal long-term skin health.

Inflammaging drives invisible sun damage.

Every hour of UV and environmental exposure builds chronic low-level inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA damage beneath your skin's surface. It's called inflammaging, and without proper skin recovery, this damage quietly intensifies collagen breakdown, weakened skin barrier, accelerated aging, and increased risk of skin cancer. Even with SPF.

Solar UV Radiation

Not all UV reaches your skin the same way. UVC rays are blocked entirely by the earth's ozone layer. They never make it to your skin. UVB rays partially get through — about 5 to 10% cross the ozone layer and penetrate the top layer of skin. This is the burn ray. It causes direct DNA damage and triggers oxidative stress through molecules called reactive oxygen species, or ROS.

UVA rays are the deeper threat. Nearly 95% pass through the ozone layer and reach the middle layer of skin, the dermis. They don't burn. You don't feel them. But they generate the same oxidative stress as UVB, and they do it deeper, where collagen lives and cellular repair happens.

Oxidative Stress and Inflammation

When UVA and UVB rays penetrate skin, they generate excess ROS that the skin can't neutralize fast enough. That imbalance damages cells, degrades collagen, and causes DNA damage at the cellular level.

Excess ROS also activates inflammatory pathways, including NF-kB and AP-1, that trigger pro-inflammatory signals throughout the skin. Those signals generate cytokines including IL-1β and IL-8, recruit immune cells, and create a cycle of chronic low-grade inflammation that never fully resolves.

SPF doesn't stop inflammaging.

Even with proper sun protection, UV exposure drives up to 90% of skin damage and premature aging. SPF blocks some UV rays. It doesn't stop what's already happening beneath the surface. The cycle of inflammaging isn't caused by one bad day in the sun. It's the result of repeated daily UV exposure and oxidative stress that causes our skin's natural repair system to fall further behind without proper recovery.

Photoaging

UV damage builds invisibly over time underneath our skin, before it shows up as photoaging. Inflammaging quietly breaks down collagen, skin elasticity, and damages DNA. Photoaging is what shows up on our skin as a result. Fine lines, wrinkles and premature aging become visible on the surface, but have been building up underneath our skin for years.

Sunspots + Uneven Skin Tone

UV accelerates melanin production, leading to dark spots and irregular pigmentation on the face, hands, and anywhere the sun hits. Repeated daily UV exposure creates the uneven tone that no basic moisturizer can address on its own, because the real problem isn't on the surface.

Weakened Skin Barrier

UV compromises your skin barrier's natural repair system from the inside, affecting the cellular structure that keeps moisture in and damage out. The result is a cycle: more damage gets in, less repair gets done. Your skin stops bouncing back the way it used to.

A Note From Our Founder

A health scare twenty years ago taught me that some of the most powerful medicines come from nature. That realization led me to a career studying the biochemistry of marine plants and microorganisms.

As a lifelong surfer and fisherman, and now a dad raising my kids in the water, I created TERNS for people who live outdoors: after-sun skincare powered by marine and plant-based ingredients that go beyond aloe to help neutralize the oxidative stress and inflammation associated with sun damage and premature aging.

Because time spent outdoors is something to enjoy, and something worth protecting.
